What are some of your favorite meals?
by Jim Stamp on February 05, 2022.My favorite meal. Served at 6PM.
It is hard to beat the dinner prepared by Lisa (Shawn’s wife) of baked ham, scalloped
potatoes, and green peas. Lisa does it so well. Shawn has become a Super Chef on the
grill as well. He attempts many kinds of cullinary delights that I have not tried. All good
Speaking of grilling. Heather Tilson has created a perfect marinade for salmon. And,
Eric Tilson has become an expert at grilling salmon. I have never tasted any better. Perfect.
I like my own spaghetti because I have become accustomed to my red sauce. According to
my taster, it seems that most Italian restaurants put sugar in their red sauce. Probably to
reduce the acidic taste of the tomatoes. I don’t like it sweet. I really like Luigi’s baked
spaghetti with Italian bread. Luigi’s red sauce is just right for me!
I like to grill NY strip steaks, porterhouse steaks, T-Bone Steaks, or pork chops served withrice-a-roni and baby lima beans. I go to Leach’s market and get beef kababs. Excellent!
It is hard to beat a filet mignon with a loaded baked potato…Sour cream, cheddar cheese, and
bacon bits. Lanning’s Restaurant does this right. Start with a salad and a lazy susan filledwith chopped bacon, cheddar cheese, beats, sardines, capers, black olives, and 7 or 8 kinds
of salad dressing. Then when dinner comes, a new lazy susan with sour cream, creamy
cheddar cheese, bacon, green onions…all to go on a perfect baked potato.
I like to make pot roast in the crock pot (8 – 10 hours) with mashed potatoes and real sweet
corn as sides. And small curd cottage cheese. I can eat cottage cheese with every meal
described above. One of the key elements to making this special is the sweet corn! Inthe summer I freeze fresh sweet corn.
I make a 15 bean soup that I can eat day after day. 15 kinds of beans, small white potatoes, layer of onion, layer of celery, layer of ham covered in tomato juice in the crock pot for 8hours.
Mustard bread. I have been making mustard bread for 62 years! See the chapter on recipes.
I really love bread! Bread and butter. Bread and extra crunchy peanut butter. Bread withbutter, peanut butter, and almost any kind of jam or jelly. I learned from Grandma Andrethat the purpose of bread is to hold up the jelly. A loaf of Italian bread with butter.
DID I SAY THAT I REALLY LOVE MY CROCK POT? A favorite meal from the crock pot is
a sirloin tip roast with French Style Green Beans slow cooked for 8 – 10 hours. Then make
some mashed potatoes and not only is it fantastic when I get home, but, the leftovers arewonderful for several days.
If soup and salad is sounding good, my favorite place is The Barn in Smithville. The saladbar is amazing and they have 5 kinds of soup. I used to be able to go to the salad bar andgo back 5 times for the soups. Can’t do that anymore. Besides, I have to save space forthe homemade breads with honey-butter.
Primos has the BEST carrot cake I have ever tasted. Just wonderful!
One of my favorite destination places TO eat is at the Spread Eagle Tavern in Hanoverton.
9 times out of 10 I will start with the Tavern Onion Soup and then order the Tavern CrustedChicken. Great food and greatest atmosphere.
Twice a year the Winona Ruritan Club has a pancake and sausage breakfast. Normally, Idon’t care for sausage but they make their sausage that includes the hams and all the goodparts. I buy extra in bulk to add to spaghetti sauce. And the pancakes are the best. Theyuse REAL milk to make the pancakes. I used to eat 10 or more, but, I have cut back to 7or 8. BREAKFAST: WE have a local restaurant that as a family we have been going to for 47 years…Sweet Henry’s.Sweet Henry’s was an ice cream shoppe when it first opened and we liked to take the kids after ball games, piano recitals, whatever. Any excuse for ice cream! And, the kids loved theplayer piano! But, Sweet Henry’s also serves a full menu. They have a great breakfast menu.
I usually get eggs, bacon, home fries, toast and coffee. However, they are about the only placeyou can get eggs benedict!
For the best French Toast ever, you have to travel to Park City, Ky to the Grand Victorian Inn.Gary makes the French Toast with French Vanilla Coffee Mate on French bread. Combinethat with the fruit bowl and coffee and you are ready to face the day!
Did I mention doughnuts??? I don’t remember ever meeting a doughnut that I didn’t like! Some more than others. But, if you are putting out Brussel Sprouts and Doughnuts I willgo for the doughnuts everytime.
We also learned some acronyms from Grandma that were used when the minister or othercompany came for dinner. FHB meant “Family Hold Back”. MIK meant “More In Kitchen”
